BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculation works

Adjusted bank = statement balance + outstanding deposits − outstanding payments. Adjusted cash book = cash-book balance + signed missing entries. Difference = adjusted bank − adjusted cash book. Both sides use exact integer pence.

Worked example

Bank £1,000 + £300 − £100 = £1,200. Cash book £1,200 + £10 − £10 = £1,200, so the difference is £0.

Example result: £0.00

Timing is different from omission

An unpresented cheque already belongs in your cash book but has not reached the statement. A bank fee missing from your books belongs on the cash-book side instead.

Investigate a remaining difference

Check dates, signs, duplicate entries and transposed amounts. Do not add a fictitious receipt just to force the two balances to match.

Assumptions and rounding

  • All entries refer to the same account, currency and reconciliation date.
  • An item appears in one adjustment list only.

Questions about this calculator

How do I enter an overdraft?

Enter a negative opening balance on that side of the reconciliation.

How do I say there are no outstanding items?

Type none. A blank list is treated as unfinished rather than silently accepted as zero.
