BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculation works

Multiply each denomination in pence by its whole-number count, add the subtotals and divide by 100. Till difference = counted cash − expected cash. All cash arithmetic uses integer pence.

Worked example

£40 in twenties + £5 + £1.50 in 50p coins + £0.04 = £46.54. Against £50 expected, the drawer is £3.46 short.

Example result: £46.54

Checking a till

Count the drawer before comparing it with the expected balance. A negative difference is a shortfall; a positive difference is an overage. Check the opening float and refunds before treating either as a sales error.

A denomination is a value

The £20 field counts notes, not pounds. Two £20 notes belong in that field as 2. Coins and notes with the same sterling face value have the same arithmetic value.

Assumptions and rounding

  • The counts are physical notes and coins, not their combined monetary values.
  • Displayed totals are exact to the penny.

Questions about this calculator

Can I leave unused denominations blank?

Enter 0 so that an unfinished count cannot silently be treated as zero.

Are Scottish notes included?

The £5 to £100 value fields can count sterling notes of those face values. No issuer or acceptance decision is made.
